Firstly I am not wanting this piece to be just an all out “bash” on the UK, I spent 7 years in the capital working, living and mostly enjoying life, but I feel now that I have moved out of the country I am in a position to comment on why I have no interest to live there again and how I think the country as a whole is going down the proverbial shitter…
Having left the UK 6 months ago, I now feel completely disassociated with the country I once thought was great. You soon realise that for years you have had the piss taken out of you by the government and councils who’s only priority seems to be making life less fun and stealing as much money as they can from your pockets.
When I read stories like David Ellis, who was fined $60 for accidentally dropping his bookmark, or bailiffs who are acting without warrants evicting people like Tom Crawford completely illegally, or new laws fining anyone who smokes with an under 18 in the car, or the interference from the EU telling you what “power” vacuum cleaner you can use, or congestion charges, or inheritance taxes, or speed cameras, or paying to watch your TV, or breathalysers being introduced in clubs, or overpriced and badly maintained public transport increasing fares, or the ludicrous political correctness we now see up and down the country? etc etc etc It’s really such a depressing sight that the country has come to this.
I’m trying to be polite about it, but why can’t you just fuck off and let people just live their lives in peace without constant meddling from everyone trying to get money out of you or tell you off? It really won’t surprise me if they bring in a new “fart” tax to combat global warming, it is getting to that stage.
The longer governments stay in power, the more they want to use that power to introduce new laws, until eventually you wont be able to do anything. It’s just simply not fun living in the UK anymore, and thats the biggest issue for me. Why would you want to spend the short time you have on this planet in a country like the UK, when there is a big world out there, with countries that can offer a much better quality of life with less of the hassle?
I don’t want to make anyone feel depressed, but I wake up to a hot day every morning, have a massage, do some work in a coffee shop for a few hours, finish the afternoon early, eat fresh street food every day and hang out with friends playing pool drinking a beer in the evenings. If I want to have a “weekend away” I have the Phi Phi Islands a train ride away. A slightly better alternative to Brighton, but most importantly and I can just live free, no interference, no bullshit, it’s perfect.
I appreciate that many people will have children and responsibilities, so this is an obvious factor that would prevent you from doing something like this, and whilst the UK does have some qualities, I cannot recommend enough anyone to try it at least. You have nothing to lose but everything to gain.
