The face tattoo can be traced back thousands of years to AD 330, where the practice was banned by Emperor Constantine due to biblical scriptures. Since then, the facial tattoo can still be seen outside of the Maori traditions, or criminal gangs that use facial tattoos to record the wearer’s personal history, and is becoming an increasingly popular procedure.
There is however still a taboo surrounding facial tattoos within the tattoo community, in-fact some tattooists simply refuse to do the procedure due to the fact they don’t want to bear the burden of potentially causing the customer a lot of problems down the road. They know that highly visible tattoos like hand and facial decorations can cause the wearer to become the subject of ridicule or impede their chances of finding employment.
There are those though that despite the risks involved, are adamant that they want this done and will go to any lengths to find a tattooist prepared to ink above the neck, so we spoke with Jake Lablanc who has several facial tattoos about how this has affected his life.
What was your first tattoo?
My first tattoo was done by my father on my 12th birthday, he did a huge skull on the top of my right arm that I still show off to this day, despite all my amazing artwork I have had the chance to get from people over the years !
Why did you decide to tattoo your face?
The reason for tattooing my face was all about my dad and mom , my mom passed away when I was 15 from drinking and drugs and just over all the tattoo life style of the 90s catching up with her. After her passing I was left alone, my dad was back into drugs and I was running the roads doing what I could to make a buck from tattoos to selling weed and crack I did what I had to do. With all that being said I felt a face tattoo would show people I was a man and not sacred of anything and at 14 that can be hard to show people, so I went ahead and asked my dad to do one. This is not the reason I had as many as i have had, but the reason for my first
What do your family / friends think about your tattoos?
My dad hates my face ink he’s just old school like that! And almost everyone of my buddy’s loves my art work and thinks I have become more social with everyone and loving my self is so easy now
What reactions do you generally receive from the public?
I get tons of people that ask for pics with me for my info to just talk about the life I may have had and I get lots of people that just would like to be ride and give a dirty look or say “eww” or some bull-shit like that
Are you employed? Have your tattoos ever affected you’re working life?
Yes I do work I will not be able to say much about that, but I can tell everyone that is worried if you got a good head on your shoulders you’ll be fine, you got my word on that.
Do you regret any of your tattoos? Are you considering any more?
So far not really, I mean some of the first ones I got 10 years ago now I wish I put more thought into them but I’m more then happy it shows a part of my life no matter what tattoo it is ! And yeah always thinking about new work as far as my face goes I don’t have tons of room so working on more touch ups and so on.
