The Digital Nomad community in Chiang Mai has been suffering some mild ‘turbulence’ lately, due to the recent actions of a pair of douchebags going under the pseudonym of ‘The Atlas Brothers’ who were recently exposed for being, well, full of shit…
Yes, these funny looking inbreds decided they would try something ‘new’, think outside the box, and start selling themselves as ‘business gurus’ as they trawled the web looking for naive morons to sign up to their $1500 Digital nomad course where they could, “Build, Launch And Grow’ your online business…
I have been an outspoken critic of the DN community for some time, I even featured in Chris The Freelancers recent ‘Life Outside Nimman’ documentary where I was asked to share my views on why I am so critical of ‘Digital Gonads’ as I affectionately like to name them… (see below)
The documentary was great fun to do and it was good to be able to share some of my thoughts on the subject, despite the narrative of the documentary being clearly agenda driven in suggesting that Nimman was in fact nothing like the cashew nut eating, unwashed elephant pant wearing, MacBook Pro showroom that I had previously ‘foolishly’ concluded.
Chris is by accounts a charming chap, but having seen his latest ‘rant’ videos on Youtube which appear to condemn anyone who is critical of the ‘nomad movement’, I can’t help but feel that despite the harmless exterior, lies someone who is completely blind and frankly ignorant to the actual reality of the community he seems all to proud to promote.
A quick scan of his Youtube channel shows video after video of nauseating interviews with the self proclaimed ‘faces’ of the digital nomad movement namely, Johnny FD, Riley Bennet and other similarly irritating characters who are no different to the Atlas Brothers, aside from the fact that they may be more subtle in the way that they deliver their bullshit to the masses.
Whilst he is quick to rightly condemn the Atlas Brothers, he has failed in his duty to perform any due diligence on the many other shady characters in Chiang Mai that prey on vulnerable people in order to line their own pockets from the pretentious image of ‘passive income success’ they falsely claim is as easy as simply signing up to their blogs.
Johnny FD is wisely regarded within the community as being the one who began marketing the ‘lifestyle’ of becoming ‘location independent’ in Chiang Mai and has accrued a loyal following of ‘fans’ in the process.
His income reports are lapped up by 100s of aspiring Tim Ferris’s every month as they wait with bated breath to see just how much he has ‘killed it’ last month and queue up to leave comments on his blog asking for advice on how they can be as ‘cool’ as him as well.
The answer is simple…
All you have to do is sign up to a ludicrously expensive drop-shipping course called the ‘Dropship Lifestyle’ by Anton Kraly (for which he is on a hefty affiliate commission for new recruits) and off you go!
Yes, ladies and gentleman, becoming Asia’s Richard Branson has never been easier and it won’t be long before you can sit underneath a coconut tree, sipping sangria, and watching your bank account ‘explode’ with passive income earnings baby!
According to Johnny FD himself, he had only $200 left in his bank account before he signed up for Anton’s dropshipping course himself (which costs over $1000) and within a month, he was balling like Floyd Mayweather on Black Friday.
Firstly, if he only had $200 left, how did he afford the course? And secondly, anyone with any experience in this business model will know that making $1000s from a new commerce website within a few months is nothing short of impossible.
Building a website and writing the content takes up a hell of allot of time and as we have now established, by this point, Johnny would now have been $800 in debt.
You also need to find suppliers and suppliers will not agree to you selling their products unless you have an established store and again, this takes time.
You can of course try retail arbitrage or Amazon affiliate, but anyone who knows these business models will know that the margins are extremely low and you need to generate a hell of a lot of traffic to achieve anywhere close to those figures.
The only way this could be ‘potentially’ achievable is through a very expensive PPC campaign, which for someone who is inevitably now $1000’s in debt, not a viable option…
Aside from the costs of web hosting, logo design, web development, general living expenses, accommodation etc — you quickly come to the realisation that this is nothing short of a bare faced lie, and it is this very lie that has got Johnny FD the attention he has.
Once you can demonstrable prove that someone is talking utter bollocks, then you begin to look at his other remarkable claims in a more critical light…
The reason why I am so passionate about this, is that there are a tonne of people out there who have followed Johnny’s journey genuinely believing his story, and will try and follow in his footsteps and lose allot of money. Money which they could be spending on their children or putting food into their mouths.
There is only one winner in this transaction and this is Johnny himself…
According to Johnny’s latest income report he states he has made $2,017.28 from his dropshipping store last month, 50% of which he has shared with a business partner called Larissa.
This means that he has ‘only’ made $1008.50 from Dropshipping over the course of the entire month.
In any western country this would be less than the minimum wage?
For someone who promotes dropshipping as one of their core business models, this is a rather pathetic effort by anyones standards and certainly not worthy of being a ‘success story testimonial’ on Anton Kralys website or justifiable in featuring in the ‘Huffington Post’ business pages…
The other $16,000 he claims to have made last month has come from ‘coaching’, ‘courses’ and ‘affiliate earnings’… hmm….
Of the $16,000 he has made from all of his different revenue streams, $14,000 of which came from ‘affiliate earnings’ yet when you try and see proof of this, you are asked to sign up to his
“Earnest Affiliate Course where you’ll get access to the confidential case studies where I show you all of my affiliate income sources and exactly how much I make from each in detail”
So, let me get this straight. 95% of your alleged earnings on your ‘income report’ have come from ‘affiliate earnings’, yet in order to see the proof (ie a photoshopped screenshot) of these alleged earnings, you have to pay for the privilege?!
Please, someone grab me an elastic band so that I can tie my nostrils together and prevent anymore bullshit from seeping up my nasal passage.
I don’t want to pick on Johnny, it’s just that he is the face of it, he is the one who is inspiring people to become mini clones with similarly annoying ‘nicknames’ and plaster my social media timelines with Tai Lopez style videos claiming to ‘hold the secrets of success’ and it needs to stop…
What ever happened to the days where people just got on with their own work and didn’t shout about how much they are making from the rooftops, as believe it or not, anyone with half a brain cell doesn’t give a fuck and thinks you are just a sad twat.
These are just very simple observations that in my opinion prove beyond doubt, that there is only one motive to publish these frankly embarrassing income reports and that is not to try and motivate people as Johnny would have you believe. They are nothing more than funnels to try and get money out of peoples pockets and into his own.
I am sure Johnny is a good guy deep down, but I just wish people like Chris the Freelancer and other Nomads with Youtube Channels would be a bit more honest and expose fraud where it needs to be exposed. If not, you are directly responsible for allowing people to leave their jobs and spend their last dollar chasing a dream that is completely unrealistic and unachievable.
This is the very reason why people are so fed up of Digital Gonads, aside from a long list of other unfortunate attributes.
The sooner digital nomads stop the bullshit, the sooner people like myself will stop reacting the way I do. I am a symptom of the problem and not the problem itself.
